INTRASTAT – when do I have to report?

intrastat

Do you supply or accept goods from another EU Member State? If so, you must have already encountered Intrastat. Intrastat is a system for recording and statistically processing the movement of goods between EU Member States. It was launched in 1993 when the internal EU customs borders were abolished and the rules on the free movement of goods came into force.

How and when should you report?

Let’s take a look at whether reporting via Intrastat applies to you. Are you registered for VAT in the Czech Republic? If you are, then the procedure is simple – you are obliged to report data via Intrastat if you exceed the limit of CZK 12,000,000 for imports of goods from other EU Member States, or CZK 12,000,000 for exports of goods to other EU countries in a calendar year. In that case, you become a reporting unit and you are required to report data without being requested to do so by the customs authorities. Reports may be sent electronically, in each case not later than on the 12th business day of the following month. You must submit reports for the rest of the given year as well as the whole following year. However, if you do not exceed the threshold of CZK 12 million in the following year, your reporting obligation ends on 31 December.

Simplified reporting

Certain changes were made in Intrastat at the beginning of 2022. The introduction of the simplified reporting option is worth your attention. What is this about? If certain conditions are met, you can send just one report per year without providing minute details. The basic condition is to reach the CZK 12 million threshold for reporting and, at the same time, not exceed the total value of CZK 20 million for imports of goods from another EU Member State or exports of goods to another EU Member State.

Watch out for possible sanctions!

The customs administrator may impose a fine of up to CZK 1,000,000 for non-compliance with reporting duties, e.g. sending incorrect reports or failing to submit them in time.
